Streaming
Media
What
is Streaming Media?
Streaming media makes
audio, video and other multimedia available
in real time, with no download wait,
over the Internet or corporate intranets.
Like television, streaming
is a one-way technology: audio and video
content is accessed and delivered from
a host location (server) to a web browser
or other streaming application. Streaming's
main benefit is that the files on the
server can be transmitted live or on-demand
to users anywhere in the world visiting
a particular web site, without downloading
or taking up desirable space on your
hard drive.
Two key components
of Streaming Media
The two key components
to Streaming Media that help transmit
real-time video via the Internet are:
compression and buffering.
Compression reduces
the size and speed of the video file,
while "buffering" allows the
media file a few seconds to load before
running the image, so a reserve of video
is available in the memory of your computer
in case the transmission slows for a
moment.
How can I
use Streaming Media for my company?
You can use Streaming
Media to:
- Extend
your reach.
Streaming allows you to reach multiple
users at the same time. This is great
for video conferencing.
- Address
a global audience. Streaming
removes geographic boundaries.
- Give on-demand.
Streaming is great for live presentations,
but with streaming servers, you can
also archive your latest presentations
and view them later. This is what
is referred to as on-demand.
- Strut
your stuff. The business
benefits of Streaming are unlimited.
You can showcase your product offering
on your web site with active demonstrations,
or even turn your road show into a
web show. Get the clients to come
to you.
- Entertain.
The possibilities for entertainment
and artistic web content are endless.
Your imagination is the only limit.
