"Jingle
all the way"
Getting YourJingle Completed
Producing a radio commercial for your
product is one of the more popular ways
to advertise. It can focus in on a target
audience, it's relatively inexpensive,
and it's a great way to reach your public.
One way of making sure the commercial
makes an impression on the listener
is to produce a jingle. We all have
one that we remember.
Deciding you want
a jingle is the first step. The following
is a quick list of other things to keep
in mind.
Always keep your target
audience in mind and what type of radio
stations they listen to. Different stations,
like Pop, Rock, Jazz, News, Country,
etc., attract different audiences. The
audience you are targeting can drive
the style of music, or jingle you are
going to create. This isn't a rule,
but a recommendation.
Determine what your
message is going to be. This could be
a slogan, product, company name, sale,
or feature of your product.
Decide if you want
a "full sing" radio jingle,
or a "donut" radio jingle.
A full sing will be instruments and
singing throughout the commercial. A
donut copy will start and end with singing,
but contain a narration in the middle,
selling or "telling" the story.
There are many styles of radio commercials
to choose from.
Get a professional
to write it. There are jingle houses
that do this full time. You tell them
what you're looking for, and they'll
be happy to help you out. In most cases,
they'll write and produce it for you.
You may also consider developing a project
with audio or video editors you have
worked with in the past. These individuals
are usually creative, and given the
opportunity can rise to the occasion.
Shop around for writers
and talent. You want to find the right
voice to deliver your message. Sourcing
talent begins with people you know in
the business. Yours may be the kind
of project that challenges them, and
in turn help deliver a superior product.
When the recording
is complete, make sure to hold on to
the master tapes (perhaps vaulting them
with other audio or video tapes you
have). This will be important in case
you want to do another version of the
jingle in the future. For example, you
may want to do a version where the music
is the same, but the vocals and narration
are done in French.
One way of
"spreading the love" is to
produce the same jingle in various styles.
Producing a jazz version, a rock version,
and a country version opens a lot of
doors. Again, keep your target audience
in mind.
Jingles have proven time and time again,
that everything from a catchy chorus
line, to a beautiful piece of background
music can sell a product like nobody's
business. If you're interested in producing
